Angus Meryon

Angus Meryon studied the clarinet from the age of seven with Colin Bradbury, then Principal of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. At sixteen he became a member of the National Youth Orchestra with whom he was co-leader for two years. He continued his studies at the Royal College of Music with Richard Hosford, performing with the Contemporary Opera Studio of the English National Opera, and winning the Roger Fallows Prize for chamber music. Angus has twice been invited to play at the Brereton International Music Symposium in Cheshire, alongside international soloists such as Walter Boeykens and Charles Neidich. In 1997 he was contracted to the agents Wright Music Promotions, and subsequent engagements have included recitals in Malta, the Canary Islands and throughout the UK, and performances of the Weber, Copland and Mozart concertos in Cheltenham and Croydon as a Jellinek Award winner. He was accepted as a soloist by the NFMS "Making Music" Scheme in 2001, and made his London debut at the Purcell Room in November 2002.  Future engagements in 2005 include a tour of the UK with the Martinu Quartet, giving performances of the Mozart and Krommer clarinet quintets.

Angus has had extensive experience in the field of music education, and has taught at Cranleigh School and at Charterhouse since 1999.  His interests in this area are linked to group tuition and chamber music, and he often combines recital work with masterclasses and workshops for pupils of all ages and abilities.  These include the development of sound projection, posture, breathing and other vital aspects of playing a wind instrument to deliver convincing performances, and also in learning the unique skills that chamber music participants cannot learn in the confines of the practice room, namely how to listen and engage with other musicians with emphasis on intonation and homogeneity of sound.
