Colin conducted the University of Surrey Roehampton Choir since 1993 and Barnet Choral Society - a large community choir in London – since 1988. With these choirs, he regularly performed in the UK and abroad Performances have included many of the major works from the choral repertoire as well as newly commissioned music. At the University of Maryland, he conducted the University Chamber Singers, which was acclaimed by one Washington DC critic as a ‘world-class ensemble’.

Following his doctoral research into the area of effective choral conducting, Colin designed and developed a graduate programme in Choral Education at the University of Surrey Roehampton, the first and only one of its kind in the UK. It has attracted students from around the world including South Korea, Greece, Portugal, Taiwan, Argentina and Canada. He has been guest conductor, clinician and teacher at schools and universities in Europe, North America, South Africa and South Korea as well as within the UK. Colin has been on the council of the Association of British Choral Directors and Chair of its London region.

Colin has written a number of international journal articles on the subject of choral conducting and Music Education and co-authored the book Making Sense of Music with Graham Welch. His highly acclaimed book Choral Conducting: Philosophy and Practice was published by Routledge in 2003. He has also reviewed papers and books and is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Research in Choral Singing.

In May 2001, Colin Durrant was awarded a research grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board in the UK to explore the role of choral singing in establishing personal, cultural and national identity with particular reference to Scandinavia. The findings were presented at the American Choral Directors Association Convention in New York in February 2003.

Colin believes in getting the best out of people - the singers he conducts and the students he teaches. As a member of the VoiceCare Network, he approaches choral conducting with a vocal-health perspective and is eager to promote expressive and tension-free singing through vocal-friendly gestures and his very warm, distinctive and encouraging rehearsal style.
