General

 

Performance Skills & Presentation ((2 hours/half-day)

For instrumentalists and singers of all abilities.

This practical workshop concentrates on highlighting the issues surrounding the presentation of a good concert or exam performance, focusing on stage presence and manners, performance nerves, posture, concentration, and how to practice and prepare on a wider scale for a concert.

Accompaniment Skills (2 hours/half-day)

For prepared intermediate/advanced pianists, student or teacher

Focusing on the skills of accompaniment, this workshop is aimed at improving the skills of piano accompanists, from dealing with first rehearsals to helping nervous students to accompanying in concert. It takes the form of a practical workshop/masterclass.

 

Multiple Keyboard Workshop (2 hours/half-day)

For students/teachers of all ages.

This workshop concentrates on ensemble work for multiple keyboards, using uniquely designed methods. Communication skills and rhythm form the basis of this classroom based project. In addition, it aims to equip teachers with the skills to continue the ensemble work.

 

Strings

 

Ensemble Work (half-day/full day with optional presentation/concert)

For string instrumentalists of all abilities

This workshop aims to improve the ensemble skills of musicians of all ages and abilities, in a wide range of repertoire varying from simple duets to complex works for larger string groups.  For less experienced players, the emphasis will be on developing a sense of rhythmic flow, using singing and games to develop early ensemble skills. For more experienced players, the emphasis will be on producing a convincing performance, on listening and reacting to other musicians in the group, sound blending and matching of dynamics, getting to know the whole score, articulation and intonation, as well as any technical issues which come up. This workshop can also take place over more than one day, and be tailored to cater for a wide range of experience amongst participants.

 

Guitar lecture recital (half/full day with optional concert /recital and/or workshop for students preparing for examinations). For guitarists of all abilities

This presentation features demonstrations of repertoire from across the full range of Trinity Guildhall’s guitar examination syllabus and advice on preparing for a grade or diploma examination. Students and teachers benefit from feedback directly from an experienced instrumental examiner.

 

Guitar Masterclass (half/full day with optional concert/recital)

For well prepared guitarists of all abilities

This session is designed to give classical guitarists the opportunity to prepare a piece to a high standard and to receive one-to-one coaching and instruction in front of an audience.  Topics covered will include technical and musical issues, tone colour and projection, dealing with nerves, and ways to maximise practice time

 

Integrated learning for string teachers (one day)

For teachers working with individuals or groups

This session is designed to give string teachers a wide range of ideas for tailoring technical work to musical ends, and for introducing musicianship, composition and improvisation into the individual or group lesson. Focusing particularly on the early stages of learning, it introduces elements of tonic sol-fa and movement work, and can be particularly tailored to support use of Boosey & Hawkes’ Essential String Method. This session can, where practicable, include a live demonstration lesson.

 

Starting as you mean to go on (one day)

For teachers working with beginners

This workshop is designed to give string teachers a wide range of strategies for working with beginners, from individuals to large groups, including developing a firm technical grounding, relating musical to technical skills, using movement, and developing ensemble skills alongside those for solo performance. It will cover suitable resources, repertoire, lesson planning and, where practicable, a live demonstration.

 

String Masterclass (half/full day with optional presentation/concert)

For prepared string players of all abilities

 This workshop is designed to give string players of any level of experience the opportunity to prepare a piece to a high standard and to receive one-to-one coaching and instruction in front of an audience.  Topics covered will include communication and personal investment in performance, dealing with nerves, technical issues, sound projection, intonation and ensemble work with an accompanist, and also ways to maximise the benefits of limited practice time.

 

Woodwind

 

Group Coaching (half/full day with linked concert)

For wind instrumentalists of all abilities

 

This workshop aims to improve the ensemble skills of musicians of all ages and abilities, in a wide range of repertoire varying from simple duets to complex works for larger wind groups.  The emphasis will be on listening and reacting to other musicians in the group, sound blending and matching of dynamics, articulation and intonation to improve the performance experience for both participants and audience.

 

Wind Masterclass (half/full day with optional concert/recital)

For prepared wind players of all abilities

 

This session is designed to give wind players the opportunity to prepare a piece to a high standard and to receive one-to-one coaching and instruction in front of an audience.  Topics covered will include dealing with nerves, sound projection, intonation and ensemble work with an accompanist, and also ways to maximise the benefits of limited practice time

 

Choirs and Singing

 

Choirs and conductors (one off, or a series of consultations)

For choir directors/amateur or school choirs of all ages

This consultation could be either a one off, or a series of consultations can be offered to conductors and their choirs on specified areas, which might include repertoire issues, teaching vocal technique within a choral rehearsal, conducting gesture and rehearsal technique. The consultants will operate sensitively and within a positive and cooperative learning environment

 

Chorus for everyone: vocal technique from the ground up (half/full day)

for inexperienced singers - both teachers and students

Kick start your school’s choral programme, with a lively and informative workshop on vocal technique, using fun and effective warm-ups and pieces that prove that everyone can sing and sound good. Includes materials, strategies, warm ups, etc. This workshop is suitable for both primary and secondary schools, but equally effective for adult learners. It is particularly useful for male voices, including changing voices

 

Opera (full day - minimum)

For students/teachers of all ages.

This workshop is designed for more advanced singers wishing to come together to study and present operatic scenes.  Having prepared arias and/or ensembles to a high level, participants will receive musical and technical advice and an opportunity to work on staging and character development.

 

Singing and vocal development workshops (half-day/one day)

- concentrating on vocal health and tension-free singing. For amateur groups or school choirs of all ages

This workshop is offered to help singers gain confidence in the use of the voice, both in a group choral context and individually. It can be aimed at less-experienced singers who wish to develop their skills in this area, even assisting with pitching, vocal technique in an holistic body and mind connected approach. Also workshops can be tailored to meet the needs of more experienced singers who wish to further their vocal development. The sessions can be offered during a normal rehearsal schedule or as a special day or half day event, or where appropriate, over a period of time. The workshop leader will be an experienced communicator, teacher and choral clinician, who operates in a safe and positive atmosphere.

 

School Choir Training Techniques (half-day/one day)

- for school choir directors 

Choir training in a school environment is not always easy, for a variety of reasons.  Similar to the options above, this workshop focuses particularly on the school choir context, working with other teachers and/or students in developing their rehearsal techniques, whilst retaining their own personal style and personality, and is led by a tutor highly experienced in choir training. Both practical and planning issues are addressed, and the workshop aims to build confidence and success in choir management at a departmental and school level. This workshop is often combined with teaching conducting (below)

 

Teaching conducting (one off, or a series of consultations)

- concentrating on effective gesture, rehearsal technique, motivations strategies and communication skills.

For choir directors/amateur or school choirs of all ages

These sessions can take the form of individual consultations or lessons on an one-to-one basis or within the context of a choral rehearsal. The consultations will be carried out by experienced teachers and conductors of choirs, who have studied and researched into aspects of conducting, in particular with amateur choirs, school, youth, community and worked within higher education in the UK and overseas. The consultation will provide feedback and explore a variety of aspects of conducting gesture to make the choral rehearsal effective and efficient and healthy, both for singers and conductors       

 

Vocal masterclass (half/full day with optional concert/recital)

For students/teachers of all ages.

This workshop is designed to encourage singers at any level to prepare a piece to a high standard and to receive one to one coaching and instruction in front of an audience.  Technical and musical aspects will be covered and advice offered on presentation skills and communication along with dealing with nerves and working effectively with an accompanist.

Composition

 

Composition for guitar (half/full day with optional concert/recital)

This workshop is designed to help composers and guitarists with differing levels of expertise understand the full potential of the guitar as a solo and ensemble instrument. It will include demonstrations of the vast array of contemporary and standard guitar techniques, an overview of tone production, a detailed explanation of the guitar fingerboard and its harmonic implications, advice on guitar notation and a chance for questions. Gary Ryan will also perform excerpts from contrasting repertoire and give feedback on compositions presented

 

Film Composition (one session or half/full day)

This workshop aims to assist students with the film music composition elements of their A-level syllabus. Opportunities are available for individual tutorials and/or group composition projects depending on the number of participants.  This workshop can be tailored to meet the specific needs of your school.

 

Film Music (one session/half day)

This presentation aims to unravel some of the issues at the heart of film music in order to provide contextual support for the film music analysis and composition elements of the music A-Level syllabuses.

 

 

Other

 

Entry to study Music at a UK University or Conservatory (one session/half a day)

- useful for both students and/or teachers

This presentation looks at the entrance requirements to study music in Higher Education in the UK, and outlines the main differences of approach and course content at many of the country’s universities and conservatoires. In addition, advice is given on how to locate a course and institution which is suitable for a particular individual for many reasons – location and cost are important as well as the musical content of the courses considered. A question and answer session is included, where the participants (in particular students) can ask about issues which are particularly pertinent for them personally
